  1. Hi Mel, can't wait for my machine to come. I have two questions.
    1) can the scan and cut deal with dashed lines. If I scanned in a printed PDF template showing dashed score lines, will it recognise and cut them?
    2) saving files on the machine means you can't sort them into categories or name them. If I save to USB can I do that?
Great demos from you and John, can't wait to see more.
    Thanks
    Diane

  2. Hi Mel
I also can not wait for mine to come :)
You showed that you can cut acrylic , would it be possible to etch acrylic?
    Thanks

  3. Hi Mel i haven't taken the plunge and ordered one YET but i was wondering if brother are going to do metalic pens as i know you have asked them to do solvent black and brown pens i wondered if this would be possible. Also is there anywhere on line i can design like other cutting machines and then take the designs to the machine via the usb as i like to design whilst watching tv with my hubbie. Only bought a silhouette portrait less than a year ago and i already have a personnel cricut but must admit i am very tempted. Thanks look forward to seeing you on TV xxxx

  4. HI Mel
I also cannot wait for my machine to be delivered. All the demos yourself and John have been doing has got me so excited and full of ideas :)
I have a couple of questions:
    1) Since the machine can cut do flex and chipboard - could it also cut grunge paper and grunge board and what would the settings be and which blade would I use?
    2) What would the settings be for kiss cutting vinyl so that you leave the sticky backing intact?
Thanks again for all your inspiration
    Alison

  5. Hi Mel.. I too cannot wait for machine to arrive. I would like to do mostly material cutting for applique, etc. I am getting confused with a few things:

I think John reckons that a separate cutting mat is good to have (purple edge)

Is it also preferable to have a separate scanning mat for fabric?

Do you always have to support the fabric with fabric support, vylene? Is it possible to do it with freezer paper? (Am I showing my real ignorance here?)

I don't know how many times you guys have mentioned the spray adhesive - still haven't written the product down properly - still, when you spray the fabric - doesn't it end up on the cutting sheet and eventually make a horrible sticky mess?

Lastly, in the show you have just finished on C&C Friday 17 1600-1700 - I just caught the last part when you were placing the small flower decal in for cutting and you said something about - and I'm not going to throw the mat away - I must have missed something fundamental here?!?!?

    And that's it.

Really impressed with the level of help you and John provide along with the C&C Team. Thank you.

    Regards

    Jackie Devonshire

PS - Also never posted a comment to a blog so not sure what the 'Comment as:' box below is - so hope I've chosen an appropriate profile........

  6. Hi Sharon
Not sure what you mean by etch....actually I do know what you mean but are you asking if the machine will,do it?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hi Jackie
I starch my fabric with a spray starch and then use heat and bond lite. John uses vylene as it can be removed. I don't know what freezer paper is but I will ask John.
I use crafters companion stick and spray and no it doesn't make a mess of the mat. Sometimes the backing paper from the heat and bond sticks to the mat but that is when I use stick and spray on the back of the fabric so I can still use them mat.
Please don't EVER spray the mat as it can block the rollers.
    Hope that helps
    Melanie xxx

  8. Hi Alison
Need to try grunge and get back to you. To kiss cut vinyl I put the cut pressure on 0 and the blade on one...depends on the vinyl though so give it a go. X

  9. Hi Mel

Thanks very much for making me buy the new ScanNCut - could really have done without it after a very expensive Christmas but, hey ho lol.

One of my reasons for buying is that I love to personalise all of my crafting but to able to do this you really need a vast array of alphabet stamps - I am hoping the scanncut will help with this. I also enjoy Iris folding so, again, being able to make aperture cards personal appeals to me as well.

A question: what happens when the tack starts to come from the feeder sheet - do we need to clean it in the way we do with acrylic stamps or shouldn't it be an issue? xx

  10. Hi Sharon
Eventually it will lose its stickiness so I would buy a spare but to be honest I use a repositional spray mount on the back of my card...NOT THE MAT!!!!!

  12. Hi Mel took the plunge this afternoon was going to wait a bit but thought what the heck I will go for the scan and cut now. I've not really been watching the demos and you may already have answered this, but can I download my Silhouette Portrait Library of shaped that I have bought onto a memory stick and use the designs on the scan and cut - are they compatable . Thanks Jackie

  13. Hi Jackie
    Are the images copyright free?

  14. Hi mel I am loving the shows you and john are doing. But what I would like to know is more about photos.

Like I know you can cut them, but can you actually copy and recreate them, like say I scanned in a picture of my little dog could I then draw him with the pens onto another piece if card?

Sorry if I sound stupid, but do not really know how the pens work hugs cheryl xx

  15. I have a ScanNcut (Xmas) I live in Canada! How would you draw a design that has multiple colours? I am thinking it each colour would have to be saved as a sep. design???

One thing I would like to see is - when you zoom in to do a 'fussy' cut - you don't have to come out of the zoom and move selection box around the item to be cut.

I have watched most of the shows that have been on Create and Craft and also purchase items like Super Smooth Decoupage paper that I can't get here and others from the UK.

Thank you for all your inspiration,
Regards, Dawn in Beautiful British Columbia

  16. Hi Mel,
I have a mixture of questions and requests I hope you don't mind?
    1. Is there an undo button? For example, if I have done a weld and realise that it isn't quite what I wanted can I go back a step? If not, I guess I can just save the item I am working on at regular intervals (as a new item)so that I don't have to start again and then delete the unwanted versions later.
    2. Can scanned items be converted to other formats? Either to enable editting in other software or in the case of documents to be able to send them to others. Also it would be good to be able to scan photos in and print them.
    3. Love the idea of a scoring pen.
    4. Enabling a perforated cut would be good
    5. Are brother planning any kind of forum for users to share/sell their creations. Silhouette have an online store and it is great.
    6. Please can the brother Canvas software be made to work on Firefox.
    7. If files are sorted into folders on the USB stick (so they are easy to find) can the machine navigate through the folders when searching the stick?
    8. On the Cut/Draw screen, could the current blade and pressure settings be shown? I bet a lot of mats get cut through because folk forget the last cut was thick card and seeing the values would prompt the user to change if necessary or at least confirm they were OK.

As I have mentioned before, I am a Silhouette fan but the scanning feature and ability to cut thicker card really sold this to me. I love 3D projects and being able to cut thicker card will be a real bonus. I was also swayed to purchase knowing that you were on board as you come up with some great, less obvious ideas for everything you promote. Can't wait to see where your imagination takes you.

  21. Hi Mel it is Elaine from Kilmarnock again. Just wanted to say Thank You for all your great shows with the Scan n Cut. Your enthusiasm and knowledge is riveting. You are one of the great guest presenters. Keep up the good work. Can't wait for my Scan n Cut to arrive

  22. Hi Mel, I have really enjoyed all the shows with you and John, so much information and ideas. I ordered my machine early and am so looking forward to it coming. I make card samples and got it to take out the tedium of all that cutting, but realise that it is going to help with so much more.
You and John seem to agree that you can cut out stamped and embossed images, but I am a little worried about possible flaking of the embossing material and would this cause damage to the machine ? Also are there any plans for a standard A4 cutting sheet?

  23. Hi, Mel, I would like to know if you can cut grunge board and if so at what settings?
    Many thanks Jacqui.

  24. Hi Mel
Loving the shows. You're enthusiasm is infectious and I can't wait to get my machine. I missed out on the 24" cutting mat and wondered if I could use my Sillhouette mat.
Looking forward to all the extras you talk Brother into lol

  25. Hi Mel
I've just signed up for you {and the machine) . I watched you with the box template and wondered if it was possible to group different elements of the design (as we do in Studio) - this would make your weeding out of unwanted cut lines easier. Also, is there any chance of Brother adding more fonts to those available. Silhouette have created a couple which, although still TTF, have been created with the parallel so close together they appear as informal cursive writing when drawn rather than as block text (they are obviously no good for cutting).

Excited to see what the next few months bring and if Brother come up with a fine line pen, I would invest in it and the penholder although I am not excited by the current batch although I haven't seen them demonstrated being used on the lowest pressure setting.
    Thanks
    Eddie

  26. Hi Mel. I am loving all the new things you are coming up with and have an idea for you. I am a quilter and quilt each block as I go, that is the top stitching that holds the layers in pace. I make my own freehand designs and currenly copy them. No longer will I need to to that as I can draw, scan and then, using the pen that disappears, draw the pattern on top of the fabric and follow the lines on my machine. This will save me loads of time and I can replicate the same design for each block instead of each being slightly different. Come 12th February so I can play for real. Oh and can you try and get Brother to support Firefox, I can't be alone in wanting to use Canvas in my regular browser.

Keep up the wonderful work, just your enthusiasm makes me want to play NOW!

  31. Hello Mel,

I have really enjoyed your demos on the Brother scanNcut. Was wondering how you made the wonderful C&C Banner with all the colours. Was it complicated to get the various colour cards on there?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am new to C&C and crafting but was impressed with the little words you cut with 'Peel-offs' on the scanNcut so I searched it out on the C&C website. The mixed colour pack doesn't seem to tell me what colours are in there, can you help with this?

  37. Hi Mel, I have enjoyed all the shows that you and John have done and well, what can I say - Fantastic, way better than the mini tutorials.
In the edit screen, when you have an item selected and you zoom in, I would like to be able to move the design around but, at present we can't. I would like that feature and also second the request for metallic pens...
Thank you so much for sharing all your time and effort with us.
BTW, is there a users group at the moment???

  39. Hi Mel - I've watched most of the demos and am waiting for our machine. I am fairly comfortable with electric cutters and have been becoming a little frustrated as you repeatedly underline the basic capabilities of the machine to prospective buyers (I know that is the object of the exercise but it does become a little flat). However in today's 1.00pm show you got me twitching when you said 'Let's see how small we can cut it' and out came that zingy peel-off cut out of the word 'sweet'.

Just the occasional testing of the limitations and thus demonstrating the true capabilities of the machine. I cut small and fine on the Cameo (and symmetrical lol) and I didn't order my machine with fine cutting in mind - what a bonus.

  40. Good morning Eddie
Thank you for your comment. It seems like you are very happy with your silhouette and I will be very interested to hear your views on the brother Scan n Cut when it arrives.
I am very sorry that you have found the presentations of the machine frustrating and flat. I will endeavour to make them more interesting in the future, although we also have to cater for those viewers who aren't as comfortable with electronic cutting machines of which there are many.
I am sure you will come up with lots of fabulous ideas on your machine and I for one look forward to seeing your creations.
    Take care

  41. Hi Mel I suggested the embossing ink pen, but after thinking this over it might not work it depends if the mat is taken through the rollers after part of the sentiment for example has been written, I'm sure you will have a better idea about that than me

    ReplyDelete
  42. I have just been looking through all my outline quilting designs and was wondering if you can use the coloured pens on plain fabric and what setting you would use. Would you be able to 'heat' set the ink for washing????

  45. Hi Mel. I know a couple of people who are very interested in the new machine, but will not have internet access in their homes. I know the question of updating the machine software has been covered on air, but would it be possible to ask the people at Brother if there was any chance, in the future, that editing software like Canvas could be available on our home machines - as we have with Studio and MTC.

  48. Hi Mel I ordered the Brother Scan and Cut from create and craft after if saw you with it I had complete faith that I had made the right purchase. I have had my cricut expression for a long time and numerous cartridges I have also got a Cameo. I saw this morning that cricut have now brought out a new machine called Cricut Explore I really don't want another machine so I am hoping you will be sticking with the Scan and Cut for some time to come as I love how you make things so simple to understand on all your shows. 59. Hi Mel
I have a question based on experience from using my silhouette portrait. If I print of a page of toppers from a CD and then scan them in using the scan mat how do I know that if I then transfer them to the cutting mat that everything will line up properly, or if doing this type of cutting out do should I just scan and cut from one mat - the cutting mat. thanks Jackie Dawes

  60. Hi Mel just read your answer re images I have purchased for my silhouette I have not read anything about copy rights on them I have purchased them as files for cutting so I can't see it would matter if I cut on the silhouette portrait or the brother scan and cut as they are freely available for purchase. Would the canvas set up allow me to convert them for use on the scan and cut.

    Regards Jackie Dawes

  61. Hi Jackie
I agree with you. Just have to be careful! You can go into scan and cut canvas and convert the files. I am investigating this for Mondays' craft clinic but if you need any help then I am sure John will help you through his blog. Gentleman crafter.

  62. Hi Mel, I am really excited about the Brother Scan n Cut but I am unsure if it can do things in a small enough scale and still cut through the thickness of the materials I would need it to. I make miniatures in 1:12th/1:24th & 1:48th scale mostly one of a kind or dollshouse items aswell as doing card and fabric crafting. Please could you tell me how small the Scan n Cut can write and cut in millimeters? Perhaps Brother could do some very fine line pens like the ones used for Zentangle and metalic pens would be really good too. I would like to know if the Scan n Cut can cut through materials like Mount board used inside picture frames, MDF & Balsa wood in various thicknesses, thin Birch Plywood used for modelling, shrink plastic and leather. Also would it be able to cut tiny holes approximately 1mm in size or less than 1mm by piercing holes rather than cutting them into thick card, mount board, Balsa etc I make miniature woven cribs and baskets and if it could cut the base shape of the basket and then put holes in it at regular intervals for the canes to be inserted it would be a god send saving so much time. If it can cut through MDF it may be possible to cut out the components of scale model buildings. What is the thickest card it has cut so far? I hope I haven't rambled on too much! Thank you for the chance to ask questions. I look forward to seeing you on Create & Craft. Very Best Wishes Louisa

I can see endless possibilities to use with my Cameo designs, and have already printed many off ready to use when the machine arrives! Looking forward to the Clinic coming up, recorder set! 75. Hi

I have actually placed an order for the Scan n Cut as I am very impressed by what I have seen on C&C but could you please ask Mel, in her opinion, is it the best electronic cutter on the market?

The reason I ask is because I already have an electronic cutter (Black Cat Lynx) and don't use it very much as I'm fed up with the (frankly) poor cut quality. It seems to have a mind of its own, I can cut the same image on the same card with the same blade on the same force and speed and the cardstock cuts ok sometimes and other times the cardstock is puckered (badly!) on the turns.

I am ok with computers and design my own svgs (using Inkscape) so the fact that the Scan n Cut doesn't connect to a pc is more of a disadvantage to me but I can understand the huge advantage for others and I can easily use the usb feature so don't think it will be a problem. My biggest need is for great cut quality.

    Many thanks
    Sue Rollings

  76. Hi Mel, I have ordered my cut and scan and my husband wonderered whether it will cut sheet plastic which he uses for plastic modelling. It is 1 to 2mm thick.
He also asks whether the pens will draw onto decal sheet.
I know this is an unusual question but hope you can help.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hi Susan
I haven't tried any machines that need a computer but I can promise you that the BSC give you a very clean cut. A quick tip for your other machine could be that the speed needs to be on full and try AG
Dusting the pressure and blade depth. ie. you may need to decrease the pressure and increase the blade depth. Hope you don't mind me suggesting this.
Honestly though, the BSC does cut brilliantly and to get it through acrylic and magnetic sheet and then felt and fabric all with a swirly design and all with an impeccable cut sold it to me.
Hope that helps. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
    Take care

  82. Hi Mel
I have enjoyed and recorded every show but would like to know if the machine will only cut around an image. Most of the demos such as the debbi moore decoupage it only cut around the apron but did not cut out the white bit between the bib and neckstrap and the doily was again only cut on the outside edge but did not cut out the bits on the inside. Hope this makes sense lol

  89. Mel I love all the shows you do and try to catch them all for all your wonderful tips. Yesterday I printed a sheet of circle sentiments and using the Brother did scan to cut with a 1mm boarder what am I doing wrong, the 1mm boarder was not an even distance on the disks though they cut out so quick couldn't have done 2 in the time the Brother took to do a full A4 sheet

  92. Hi Mel, Have had my machine since March, and have a love-hate relationship with it!!! I mostly love it, but have some problems which are really difficult to solve on your own. Is there a forum somewhere I can log into please? My current problem is that I like making flowers from paper, but the machine is tearing the paper. I have tried a new blade, altered the cutting depth etc. but it still tears the paper! Any suggestions please?
Love watching you on TV, you are sooooo confident.
    Regards
    Jeanne

    Hi Matt,
I have just received My ScanNCut and is now out of the box. I have subscribed to Paper Dreams Blog and have watched the Video above. My question is
What is the use of overlap removal in the tutorial, I didn't understand why you used that feature?
    Many thanks

  94. Hi Mel
I scanned in a sheet of tags that I printed in black and white , I wanted to do a direct cut but it only recognised 6 out of the 9 on the sheet and only cut 6. Have you any idea what went wrong. Thanks

  95. Hi Mel

How did the test run for the grey board go? Want to start making some gift boxes using this material, so would be great to have some tips on machine setting.

    Many Thanks
