Welding Shapes

Good morning crafters
I have had a few email re welding on the BSC so I thought I would do a quick write up for you.

You have to bring the letters up one at a time. So go in to fonts and choose the first letter and set it on the screen. Then press add and go back and put you second letter on and the set and so on until you have got the word you want. Then go in to the edit box which is in the top left hand corner of the screen...it has a red square and a circle and triangle in it. One of the letters will be highlighted. You can then either use the stylus to move the letters or you can use the box that has the four arrows in it to move them. Move  the letters together so they overlap each other slightly. Then tap on the box that has three red squares in it  and tap the box with the three shapes in it. Press ok and then press weld which is to the left of the ok button the one without a red rectangle in it. It looks like a circle and a triangle welded together.
Note that if you have any other shapes on you mat that you are not welding together then it won't weld. So if for eg. You bring up a number seven and a boys name and you only want to weld the boys name then you have to remove the 7 and put it back after you have welded the name.
I hope that makes sense.

Have a great weekend
Love and hugs

  1. Hi Mel, I have done just that with a word and then I wanted to weld it in to a square aperture so that when the aperture is cut the word is left hanging. It won't let me do this although the word is touching both sides. Am I doing something wrong or expecting too much! - it just asks if OK to weld outline.

  2. Hi. No it won't allow you to do that...it's on my list of suggestions for brother.x

  3. Hi Mel, Thank you so much for all your hints & tips with the BSC. With you & John working so hard on your demonstrations it's like having the 2 of you in my house helping me. John has created a couple of shaped using Serif Craft Artist & then cut them out using the BSC. I am unfamiliar with Craft Artist & therefore I'd like to know if I can create shaped templates like this using the version 2 software alone or did they come from digikits ? And if so do you know which kits ? Thank you so much for all your efforts & you're always really good fun to watch x

  4. Thank you so much, I think I know where I've been going wrong now. Will give it another try. You have been totally brilliant with your BSC demos, along with John you've given so much advice, I hope that Brother are looking after you ๐Ÿ˜‰ thAnks again, Julie.

  5. To make floating words for an aperture you need to use the Canvas online software. Brother would need to add the Subtract and break apart commands to the software on the machine to make it easier. First you need to create a frame as youcan't weld a word to a simple shape to get the effect of a floating word. Then weld the word to the frame and delete the outside part of the frame. In Canvas ... open basic shapes and select a square. Copy and paste to create another square but make it much bigger. Place the two squares one inside the other centreing them as best possible, select all and use the subtract command from the top tool this will give you a solid frame ( if when you select and hit subtract the whole shape disappears then select the smaller shape, right click and bring to front). Prepare your word and place it over the frame .. now select all and weld. This will give you a topper .. to make an insert double click on the figure and the editing nodes appear, click on each of the nodes of the outside shape in turn and delete them using the - sign that appears on the editing tool bar. Once you have deleted the outside shape you are left with your floating word ready to place on you card and cut out. It's more difficult to explain than to do but Brother really need to add another couple of commands, also an Align button would be great. Hope this helps.

  6. forgot to say now save to a USB stick download to your machine and save. You need to make the outer frame as big as possible whilst making the inner frame the approximate size you need ; as we don't have a break apart command and need to delete the nodes the more room for manouver we have the better! It's a work round idea and much easier to do in other programmes but at least if you work in Canvas you don't need to convert the file!!

  8. Hi Claire
I think you would be better asking John that question. Not really played with my serif yet.
    His blog is gentleman crafter.

  9. Thank you Mel! I struggled with this yesterday and got no where, so will go back tomorrow and try using your instructions. I think I was trying to type the whole word in and weld that whereas you say to put the characters in individually. I did manage to finish a very simple banner today! Yay me!

  13. Thanks Susi, worked a treat! Next question is can two saved designs in Canvas open on one page? I have saved the word 'Happy' and then saved others such as 'Anniversary, Christmas etc but can only get up one at a time. Again, am I missing something or does that have to be done in the machine?:0 So enjoying my playtime!

  16. Hi Mel
Having problems cutting Mirri card, what blade settings and pressure should I be using?
Otherwise doing and learning a bit each day, really I think i couls be at it for 24hrs and still keep learning. How about a show with you and or you and John, going through different papers, cards settings and pressures for us old ladies. Just a thought. Keep up your wonderful teaching.

  17. Hi. Lynne
I did a craft clinic a couple of weeks ago doing exactly what you have asked for. If you check out the later blog post the setting are on there. If you need any more help just ask. Xxx

  18. Hi Mel~me again. It is said you do not need a computer for Scan and Cut, but is there anywhere that we can get the manual that comes on a disc that actually does need a computer? My computer access is at the local library where I am not allowed to put an unauthorised disk in the equipment to print it out {which at 25p a page is also costly} and all my other access is via an iPod that does not have disk loading facilities. I am struggling with stuff and need the manual, so need to know if I can buy one somewhere, or is there some way I can access online with out a disk reader. I am sure I am not on my own in this. Thanks for your time.

  19. Hi Mel,
I have found that a couple of different types of card I have used have left some of the reverse side stuck to the standard mat and I can't remove it all. One was a mirri card and the other a textured card. Any advice? Regards, Sheila
