Scanncut Canvas

Hi
From this morning Scanncut Canvas is available for use with iOS and Android tablets.
See release notes when you log in.
This will give you a MUCH LARGER SCREEN to work with.
Enjoy

  1. I am confused. The release notes talk about a version 2 being available, but on the download support site the latest release is still 1.32. Where can we find version 2? also talks of wifi capability "on wifi enabled machines"...what models are?

    1. The release notes probably refer to the new machine not the software, the scan n cut 2 which has just released in the states it has wireless and direct connection capabilities and a bigger screen. The model is CM 350 I think. The software version on our actual machines is 1.32 and we are still waiting on our software update.

  3. Hi Mel, have taken the plunge and ordered the new scanncut, I own cricut explore machine but every time you want to cut its very slow downloading. Had a look at canvas, but was a bit disappointed , notmuch to work with!
Maybe it will make more sense when I have my machine.

  4. Hi mel. My hubby has ordered me the scan and cut as an early birthday present and it has been dispatched. I am so excited. I have watched the shows for over a year now and the CM300 has been the most affordable for us so I can't wait. Is there any difference in what you have shown over the past year on the 600 compared to the 300? Thanks Becky xxx

I`m so disappointed I had resisted in buying the scan &Cut but scummed this April as it was still exclusive to C&C and will be for some time . the machine cost me £404 for u and C&C saying this machine wil never be out of date update will be free on canvas only to find out now there is a new machine ScanNcut2 released with wif-fi capabilities so mad that means my hard earned money in vain rant over

    1. Hi Melanie
      Great name by the way..lol
I understand your frustration but the market is very much driven by the U.S. Who seem to want wifi.
You will still have to go to your machine to put the mat in though!
Personally I will still use my USB sticks as I can have different ones for different categories.
They have just updated canvas so it can now be used on a tablet and iPad so this gives you a bigger screen to work on.
Please please rest assured that the updates and support will absolutely be continued for the CM600 and there are great updates on the way.
As a business Brother would be crazy not to meet the demand but I have to say I love my CM600 as I am sure you do too so no NEED to buy a new machine.
      Big hugs.melanie xxx

    7. Well, as of 9 am on 11th September on Brother Europe site:
CM700 and CM900 were updated on 10th September to version 2.0 (Don't know where in Europe thesemachines released)
CM600 users are still stuck on version 1.32.
Even the new CM300 model is at version 1.5.

The original US scanncut version 1.32 update contained functionality to read PES embroidery files so that applique can be cut directly from the embroidery design file. The CM600 never got this fucntionality in the UK version 1.32 update. This is a function I absolutely want and to see the US get it and the UK not is disheartening to say the least. It is in the ScanNCut 2.

I think you must press Brother firmly on this Mel, as what Brother are telling you doe not appear to be tallying with what Brother is doing. It's your reputation after all when you give out information Brother tells you that does not appear to be true. The UK appears to be the poor relation. We already are missing functionality the US and the rest of Europe has been given and it does not bode well for UK updates.

    10. Hi! Don't be mad at the US quilters & crafters...we have 10,000,000 quilters alone! ALL of us worldwide are
creative ๐ŸŒŸ! One of my tech support suggestions to Husqvarna Viking got permanently added to all the Diamond levels.

YES--your 900 is the same as our 650 except they're also including a deep

    1. Hi Sheila
If you have done the 1.32 update you will also have the 10 step UNDO button on your machine! The icon for this is a back arrow on your resize screen
Further software updates will be available for the existing CM600 before the end of this year.
It is not possible to do an UNGROUP button as I have said and that is why it available for free in canvas.
The CM700/900 HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED IN EUROPE and that has come directly from Brother.
      Take care

  10. Hi Melanie I just bought the machine from create and craft and I am attempting to put the faux stitching lines as per your Utube video. The canvas I have on my pc looks different from yours and I cant find the create off set line. I would really appreciate help. Thanks Anne

  11. Anne select you shape and right click. This brings up a box which has 'create offset ' click on that and select internal offset. Drag the slider to the required offset, click ok. Select your offset. Next go to the properties box. It looks like a black oblong with slots in it. Select drawing line, and below that is a line style box. Click on that NDP select a dazed line. Close the box. Select all and group

  13. Hi Mel, I am really struggling to transfer converted SVG files in Canvas into my Brother Machine. I am using a compatible USB stick on Brother's list. When I check on my computer, the FCM file is definitely on the stick, but when I put it into my Brother machine, I keep getting the message "USB Media is not inserted. Insert USB media". What am I doing wrong? Please help.

  19. Direct Connection via USB Cable – This is a new feature included with both the CM350 and CM650. It allows you to connect your computer to your ScannCut2 machine using a USB cable. However, the USB cable is not included for either model. Is 650 same as cm900 don't want buy machine doesn't do what I need please can you help asap

Built in Designs – There are a few new designs compared to the older models. The CM350 will have 631 designs and the CM650 will have 1102 designs.

Scanning Color Recognition – This is a new feature and is available on both the CM350 and CM650 models. It will be interesting to see how this compares to the older versions but essentially you will be able to choose between grayscale or RGB color mode when scanning.

12” x 24” Scanning Capability – This feature is only available on the CM650 model. It’s what we have been waiting for which is why we will be buying the CM650. We have been wanting to scan using the 12” x 24” mat we have but our current Scan n Cut machine will only scan using a 12” x 12” mat.

SVG Files – This is a great new addition and is available on both the CM350 and CM650 models. Now you will be able to import SVG into your machine without converting them.

PES Files – If you have an embroidery machine that accepts PES files then you will love this feature as the ScannCut will now read files containing stitch data. However, it is only available on the CM650 model.

Universal Pen Holder – Brother have also been playing a video on their channel that shows a new Universal Pen Holder. However, they do not specify if it is only available for the new ScannCut2 machines nor whether it is available for both the CM350 or CM650 models

I need your help. I am a very busy person who loves crafting, but does not have the time to learn all this new technology even though I am not new or totally useless with it. I need to book a workshop with you with the scan and cut. I am willing to pay for you to come to my house and bring other crafters with the same interest or just me. I leave in Salford, Ellesmere park Eccles Gt Manchester not very far away from. We can work around our schedule and come to a date. Please let me know whether this is okay for you. And when we can further discuss this. Thank you. Your sincerely, best wishes. Paola

  29. Hi Mel
I have only just discovered your blog and found all the comments about the scan n cut very interesting. I purchased the CM600 almost a year ago from Create and Craft having watched your demos etc. My main use is cutting fabric for appliquรฉ so when I came across a video on YouTube by Brother I was delighted that the update for the scan n cut supported .pes files)). I tried a few times to follow the video but found my scan n cut wouldn't 'see' the files although my iMac could see the .PHC files. Little did I realise that the update was for America only. Having emailed Brother uk for advice I was gutted to learn the update is not for us Brits!!! Their reply on 13th Nov to my email included this from Brother UK "Unfortunately there are no plans to upgrade the firmware on this model and at the moment there are no UK models that support this feature." There was no mention of the new model released in America. I am truly gutted by the lack of features us Brits end up with compared to America etc. I really need the new features but can not afford a new machine.

  30. Hi Mel, I recently purchased the Brother Scan n Cut CM300. I have heard about the updates for the 600, but no mention about any updates for the 300. I am worried that if the 300 can not be updated, I have purchased an inferior machine. Please can you help me please, because I love the machine, that I have named Bran.

  31. Hi Mel, I have to say that I have a sinking feeling that I have bought a CM300 machine as a white elephant:

    - Looking at what Brother in the US is doing with their respective CM350 vs CM650, it looks like the CM6xx machines will get the 12" X 24" scan function but not the CM3xx.
    - Create and Craft sold the CM300 as "IDENTICAL to the CM600 machine, with the only difference being the accessories included. With regard the USB computer port at the rear it is described as only being available to the CM600, in plain words they are not the same machine.
    - Wireless access, as has already been raised above, why is it not available? I hope and wonder if the functionality is built into all machines (cost savings from building one circuit plan for all models is very common in the printer industry with machines "dumbed down" for the lower level machines). We run a small art and craft business from home and this functionality would greatly enhance our use of the S&C.

I look forward to hearing your interpretation of what Brother is planning, at the moment it looks like they have happily left Create and Craft in the unenviable position of being culpable in fraudulently selling a machine, that really is the epitome of the white Elephant in our craft room.

  32. Hi Mel

I bought the CM300 a few weeks ago when it was on offer, only to be disappointed to find that the CM600 bundle just a few days ago was cheaper .. that's just my luck I guess!!

Anyhoo, I'm having a bit of an issue with the machine - it doesn't seem to be able to cope with small designs. I have some holly leaves that I'm trying to cut out and I've put the speed all the down to 1, the pressure to -7 and it STILL destroys the point of the holly leaf where it finishes the cut. I'm about to throw it out of the window in frustration!! Is there something that I'm completely missing or is the ability to cut small intricate (although I wouldn't have called holly leaf outlines overly intricate) a bit of a misnomer?

    Many thanks

  33. I've got the 600 and can't cut any intricate designs at all no matter the size. Had the tattered lace usb and gave up and sold it. Just have to keep to straight forward designs I suppose but quite disappointed with machine at mo. Thought it was just me as they always work when shown on TV!

  34. I am no expert but would say pressure of 7 is way too high and probably the reason for your problems. Think Mel would suggest blade depth of 4 or 5, speed of 5 and pressure of 1 if you are cutting card. If doesn't cut either cut a second time or blade depth up a little. Hope that helps. I have successfully cut from Tatt Lace USB by listening to Mel's guidelines.

  37. Well, I've read all the comments above, most of which are questions I'd also like answers to! Does anyone EVER get a reply on here? They do seem rather few and far between! It appears most of you have been left hanging; waiting for answers; waiting for help; waiting for a reply from Mel (or another experienced S&C user/crafter)? I'm somewhat disappointed that Brother's UK Representative/Spokesperson, Melanie Heaton, doesn't seem to have the time, inclination, willingness or ability to answer our questions. It would appear, once we've been lured into parting with our hard earned cash, we're pretty much on our own, floundering helplessly around in the hope we stumble across other users/groups who can help with our "old out of date" machines from C&C (who are culpable too). They need to clear their shelves of old stock, ready for shiny new replacements! It's not only the lack of replies or help, we also discover we've been duped by Brother too, for not affording us the same upgrades, etc as our US counterparts! It's so unfair and VERY disappointing! But that's just about the epitomy of my life!

I've found some Facebook Groups you might find useful?

    3. Thanks for your reply DJG. It's nice to know I'm not alone in my thoughts... just my S&C queries, lol :-)

As I continued to read down the page of question after question with no replies, I really felt sorry for them. It's sometimes not easy for people to pluck up the courage to ask a question, for fear of appearing silly if it's a relatively easy thing. But the point here is, if you don't know the answer to something, however lame it might seem to others, that particular person was experiencing a problem or difficulty and was reaching out for help. They didn't get that help and my heart went out to them. Shame on the blog site owner. Happy Crafting. Love Beth x

  39. I'm glad you got a reply my question wasn't answered I found out for myself, maybe Mell didn't know the answer. I'm not new to cutting machines and making files I've had several machines that use different types of files including SVG's

      1. Wil be a machine calibration to make sure it is cutting right on the line.
      2. Will be SVG readability without having to convert the files first.
      And the best one......
      3. RGB colour scanning recognition which is amazing.

  50. Hiya Mel,
having issues since buying my machine ripping card or not cutting, c+c wont help. My blade is now on depth 9 and pressure 2 (mainly DCWV you know the big ones that were on 3 for 2 on c+c)not cutting through card and shredding any detail. Thought I would get new blade see if that helped but out of stock! typically, getting desperate wanting to play, i've had it since (I think) may and not had much luck and want to play with it. Thx Jasmine xx

  53. Hi Mel

My husband is kindly going to buy me a brother scan and cut machine. I wasn't sure which one to choose, as c&c are offering the cm300 cheaper with a bundle or the cm600 and the limited edition one for more £££s without extras. Reading these comments, I am confused further and concerned that I may purchase something that will be updated again in very little time.

I would firstly like to know the main differences between the machines and secondly an honest opinion from any owners already on which machine would be best to purchase, and why.

    Thanks in advance x

    1. Hi
It will cut all the shapes that are on the mat. It also depends if they are grouped.
You may be able to ungroup in canvas and then delete the shape you don't want but if it is a file it will depend how it is written.xxx

Can you pleeeeeeese tell me how or even if it is possible to use handwriting fonts and use the scan n cut to draw it out as one line and not as a cut line (double lines) I want to be able to write sentiments etc in cards.
I did notice that the new cricut can do this and was hoping that I could do this on my machine (CM900)
Also thanks for all your inspiration and demos. I have only had my machine a few days and love it!!!! I also purchased your DVD which was MOST helpful :)

    1. Could it be that your sister in law had already registered the machine with Canvas so it doesn't recognise it with your name/email address? I would contact Brother and explain it was given to you so could be registered under the previous owners name/email address....I'm sure they will be able to sort it out for you their customer service seems to be very good

  73. Cathy Silhouette Studio can use SVG files but they are just SVG files not Silhouette Studio SVG files Silhouette Studio file format is .studio. If your machine can read SVG'S then it should read them.

I should add it's only the Designer Edition of Silhouette Studio tha can use SVG's

  76. Hi Melanie
Can we open multiple layouts on canvas? If not, it would be great to be able to have open a few different mats so that we can copy and paste between different projects. Would be great if you could suggest that :)
I am used to using the Silhouette Studio software and on there its much easier to be able to have open various pages.

  77. I would like to see the jpeg image that I have scanned to my SD open in canvas. My thought behind this is, that if the mat wasn't removed from the machine, you could work the cut line on a scanned decoupage with the node tool and then save it back to the machine via the SD to cut (obviously if the mat scan is the same on canvas as is on the machine). I also use Silhouette studio for my Cameo and find it so easy. I do samples for one of the companies on Create and Craft and bought the Scanncut as I thought it would help with decoupage. If they could do something wonderful to help with decoupage other than the colour recognition
    thanks Linda x

  79. Hi Mel
    ?
I am watching some YouTube instruction videos to try and get my head around the ScanNCut and see that they have access to additional shapes, etc., via a purchased 'stamp' set? Some of the shapes I've seen would be much more up my street than the built in ones I have - can we get access to these shapes/any other shapes via ScanNCut Europe? Seems to me that we are the poor relation of the ScanNCut community in terms of access to new stuff.

    Many thanks

    1. Hi Peri
We too have access to the shapes for the stamp kit. We have sold it on air twice now and I think it is still in stock. You need to buy the kit and inside is a 16 digit code to access the new shapes.
We have also been given two FREE updates recently which are fabulous and change the machine to a full colour scanning recognition, SVG readability, machine calibration, group and ungroup, alignment feature and extra icons in the fonts.
Check them out you will be pleasantly surprised

  80. Hi Mel,
A scrapbooking question. Can you tell me which photo printer you use and are you happy with it? I desperately want a compact photo printer, it doesn't have to be handheld but we don't seem to have as much choice as they do in the US. I've heard some conflicting opinions about the Selphy range.

  84. Can you please tell me if the Tattered Lace usb sticks that are advertised for Brother Scan and Cut can be used through a compatible program and used on a Cricut to cut the designs. What extension do the files have on the sticks?

    Replies
    1. Hi, I treated myself to the Tattered Lace USB Sticks 1 to 5 and found the website

      http://ideas-r-us-software.uk/FileConverters/BrotherFCMConverter.aspx

and was able to convert 10 fcm to SVG files per day for free and am now using them on my Silhouette Cameo. If you want to convert more than 10 per day you can pay a small amount to do this. I'm so glad I found it.

Just one note, it will not convert the Brother Memory USB Stick - Paper Craft Pattern Collection and Home-Deco Pattern Collection as they are in a format that the machine will only read which is disappointing. I am not sure if I should keep them both incase I get a ScanNcut in the future or just sell them?

      Regards,
      Tx

Have the CM600, my brother was playing around with it,& found the black blanking plug over usb socket is removable.
My brother reckons there is a secret service menu that could be access if he knew how, so allowing this usb connection to be used.
Would be great if Brother brought out a firmware update for the CM600 to make the socket activated, therefore allowing a connection to a pc, & giving you a bigger work area, etc
