Two new arrivals

Good morning
Well, what a week! On Monday morning at 1.52am my beautiful grand daughter Alice Rose Heaton made her entrance. I am beside myself with pride. She is so lovely and I suspect she will wrap us all around her little finger!!!!!!

My second arrival will make an appearance tomorrow at Noon.
I have the pleasure of launching TODO on http://www.createandcraft.tv/todo
It has been a pleasure working with TODO and to have four different techniques in one machine is great.
Please join me if you can.
Big hugs
Melanie xxx

  11. Hi Mel

Could you please demo on Sunday using an A4 embossing folder and also another intricate brand of die other than a Todo die....am seriously considering this machine but obviously it is a considered purchase and I would need to know it performed these tasks well also. Would greatly appreciate it,as am sure would lots of my other crafty friends.

    Many thanks

  17. Hi mell, I have received my TODO machine an I really want to love it but I tried for 2 hours to die cut a Sue Wilson die well I tried 3 different ones of hers with no joy what so ever I even managed to take the rollers down a lot more than it says but it still won't cut, I thought I must be doing something wrong so I tried the todo dies a they cut beautiful, but unless I can cut my many other dies it's just not worth keeping, if you have any ideas please can you let me know as I really really want this machine. Congratulations on your new gran baby she looks lovely. Many Thanks Melody

    1. Hi wendi, I have been trying to cut dies from the French collection I even got the rollers down to 4 an it's still not a clean cut same with the lattice tonic dies, you can't poke the cuts out the die cut you are having to rip them out. Today I took it to a craft group an I let 4 ladies have a go with there own dies but each one had same problem. I am so disappointed I was really hoping to replace my GC an my hot foiling craft dragon with this TODO. Thank you though wendi for your reply

  19. Hi Melody
Try embossing the die first using the A plate and then the die and card and then the C mat and then the D plate. Then remove the C Mat and cut using the A and D plates. See if that helps.
If that doesn't work try cutting an A4 magnetic sheet in half and placing it under your green base plate in the area of the die.
I have had some tricky dies and this has helped.
Please let me know how you get on.

    2. Hi Melanie, I thought I would let you know I tried what you said, an I am very pleased to say I have now managed to get it to cut the sue Wilson dies, the only way I could make it work was by using it this way A Plate a magnetic sheet on top then the die/card the small D plate an had to take rollers down to number 4 it cuts perfect but do need to turn an do a second run through on a few of the sue Wilson dies. Thank you for surggesting the magnetic sheet as I really was about to give up completely, I think we all need to mess about with the plates an rollers an not just try an do it by what the instruction book says. Really happy now thanks mell. Take care Melody xxx

  21. Hi Mel,
I am seriously considering investing in the todo. I enjoy using a variety of craft materials and brands and love using the project life items so was just wondering if the hot foils part of the todo works with the project life minc items or are they only suitable using a minc?

Congratulations on your Grandaughters safe arrival too :-) x

  22. Hi Mel, Don't know if you can help. I have received my Todo and having fun except I cannot get the largest of the butterfly frames to hot foil. It only just fits the metal plate and no matter how I try it rides off the plate and will not print the whole thing. Everything else is fine. What am I doing wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  23. few hours later... I have solved it thanks.
I placed two large plates upside down equally on the hot plate and the die over the join. Allowed to heat up fully and put my pressure on 8 1/2. Hey presto all foiled with no missing bits.
My pressure seems very different to the manual. I have to foil on 4 1/2 not 2-3 as advised, but it works so going with what I feel is right when moving the rollers.

  24. hi Mel
Todo is fab! Took ages to mess around and cut dies i had to use grand aliber plates on the highest setting as no other combination worked. Bbut using different embossing folders is a doodle as no more guessing and remembering which sandwiches to use. Plus I have made my own hot foiling plates ! I used embossing folders and thin copper metal sheets and they work a treat You can use the positive and negative sides. You can also die cut the copper sheets and use the die cut shapes for foiling! More sturdy plates to put in the bottom of the machine would be good as the die cutting really is awful but I do have a grand caliber for that :) off to see what else I can do! Sofie

  27. Hi Anne
I am assuming you mean SIZZIX DIES, lol.xxx
You need to take the green plate out and use the A plate on the bottom, then the die and material and then the B plate.
Hope that helps....if not email me at melanieheton@netscape.net.

  28. Hi Mel my TODO arrived yesterday and I fixed it up today out of the box. I really want to enjoy it and although it is my first impression, I'm disappointed so far with foiling and die cutting. On foiling the A plate moves and the this moves the card and foil so I haven't got a crisp enough foiled image yet. I'm using the shapes that came with the machine and whatever the setting of the roller and card weight the dies seems to dig into the card in some spots so it doesn't look very professional. I also have a static problem with the card jumping up onto the A plate when I put it on top of the card and foil. Do you have any answers to these issues please.

    2. i have had limited success with the hot foiling too i have tried with hunky dory adorable scorable and with different settings on the roller and all that happens is that it chews up the card and foil i have used a whole roll of gold foil and nothing to show for it

      Delete
    3. Using a "Bounce" sheet (dryer sheet for laundry) works great! Just rub it on your paper and plates to take care of the static problem. Hope this helps you, God Bless!

  29. i have the same problem with the card jumping up but now i put the card on the Aplate and then place it on i still cant get a fully foiled die cut ,but hope i can get better

    ReplyDelete
  30. I use a pressure a lot different to the manual. I use 5.5 and get no bits digging into the card now, I get beautiful foiling with no bits missing. The A plate only moves about 1.5cm. Its not the same "feel" as die cutting. If I feel any resistance I lighten off the pressure and if there is any problem I just go back 1/2 notch.
It really is trial and error. Every machine is different and mine is definitely outside all the suggested numbers. I haven't had any static with the card jumping up. I do make sure I fully cover the foil with my card.
It really is a good machine when you get the right pressure. Keep a note of the pressures your machine does next to the table in the manual. Hope this helps

  31. Been using my TODO today and hotfoiling for the first time. I got a couple of good results but with dies the results were a bit hit and miss. Is it the pressure?

And I got the metal plate to use up the waste but I wasn't sure how to make it work.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Madmary, The pressure is important. The roller shouldn't be stiff at all, it should just glide over. The work is being done by the die melting the glue on the foil, so nice even speed, not too fast.
If it is not good, go down half a notch and try again. Also try different card. Glossy and matt. Even the different foil colours work better on some than others.
Any use of the waste is a benefit. it wont be brilliant every time. The foil has done its job and any extra is a benefit.
Place the plain plate on the heated area and let it heat up for a few minutes. Place the foil colour side down as usual and then your card. I like to use shiny card for this technique. Not holographic, as it has a plastic coating and not all foils will stick.
If you want to contact me privately at Hilary@gosport.freeserve.co.uk I will arrange to send you some foil to practise getting your pressure right. That way you can do your test pieces with different pressures and different card stock without worrying you are using up your special foil. Then when you are happy with your results do your proper foiling with the special Todo foils.

  33. Hi Mel,

I have recently received my todo machine and have played around with it some since receiving, however I feel the jury is still out on this machine, as I am finding a few problems.
    1. Using embossing folders, I cannot seem to achieve a clean sharp emboss, and I have played around with settings, in order to get it kinda okayish I have it up quite high and the roller is very hard to turn.
    2. I am also getting the static when hot foiling, the foil flys up and when I manage to get card down it the same flys up. I am having to hold down really hard on plates to try and prevent any movement from hot foiling plate, as it has marked the hot plate and removed some of covering. That is me bringing the pressure down from what is recommended.

I haven't tried letter pressing or stamping yet, I am having to use a magnetic shim with my other dies to get a good die cut, as I was getting results of embossed in middle and cut on outside, again, still playing about with pressure.

Do you know how I can get the plain hot foiling plate, so I can use the negative of the foils?

    Many thanks

    Sharon xx

  34. Hi Sharon,
I have no doubt Mel will have plenty ideas. I do my embossing folders on 7.5 using plate C the flexible one and plate B the mid size one. I get no flat spots or missed bits.
Every machine is different, so it is practise.
I can't say I use mine for die cutting, as its mostly in use for foiling.
I can give you a hot foil tip if it helps.
Take the hot foil die and loosely draw round the shape on scrap card. place the die on machine to heat up. Meanwhile cut the shape out of the centre of the scrap. leaving the outer "stencil"
Now when you place your foil onto the die, place the "stencil" over the foil and die. It holds the foil in place. Now try placing your card over the top and hopefully the foil stays where it is.
I haven't had any foil or card affected by static, but have tried this for you and it works holding down the foil, but doesn't affect the die as its just resting outside the die.
You can keep the "stencil" with the hot foil die and use time and time again
I have some photos of what I did if that is any help to you. Don't think I can post photos on here, but if you want to contact me they will be fine in an e mail

  35. Hi Mel, I have had my Todo a few days now but like Sharon above I am having terrible trouble with embossing and die cutting. Not even tried hot foiling or stamping! I cannot, however much I make adjustments get a crisp emboss - using tattered lace 8x8 folder it only embosses half beautifully then the other half hardly at all! Even making a slight adjustment broke the plastic hinge on the folder!I have tried different weights of card and even paper and have the dial on 8 and a half any lower and it feels tight. Same with dies - never getting a clean cut first time always having to turn and turn which I could do on my Grand Calibur! Really really disappointed so far and Calibur is back on my desk. Have you any ideas!??? Thanks Janis

  36. I have just about given up with this darn machine, the hot foiling just does not seem to work no matter which cardstock i use including adorable scorable, or which pressure i turn the dial onto it just chews up both cardstock and foil or only foils part of the image, embossing is patchy so will not be using it again as i am fed up with it

  37. Hi Irene,
Don't give up. Give it another try. Place a small hot foil die onto plate and Let the machine warm up and leave 5 minutes after the light has gone out. Go make a cuppa.
Now place foil on top of die with shiny colour side down to die. You should see a silver matt colour facing up.
Now place on your piece of card with the side you want printed face down. Cover with A plate.
set machine to 6 and try that. Don't worry that it doesn't feel like anything is happening. If not good result, go down to 5 1/2 and try again. your die should not eat into your card. I did have one die that create and craft replaced as it did eat into my card each time ( it was a large fancy oval). Work with a small die first. you wont waste as much foil that way and when you get more confident go up to the bigger dies. If you want to message me privately Hilary@gosport.freeserve.co.uk I can send you some practise foil so you are not wasting your "best" Todo foil.
The machine is good, it just takes a little practise to get it right but its worth it.!
